If I were an episode of a television show this weekend, I think it would be the Saved by the Bell episode where Jessie gets hooked on the caffeine pills because she takes on too many things. On monday I have a final exam, a paper due, and a final project due. For the past few months I've replaced my constant diet of black coffee with the healthier, and arguable more pretentious Earl Grey tea. Right now, I'm drinking coffee. I've a suspicion that tommorow it will be a red bull day. Why am I doing this again? Oh yeah, that's right...to achieve my dream of becoming a librarian. |

There are many reasons why I prefer the Arabica in Lakewood to the Arabica in Stow, however the main one is the consistency of good music played by the baristas in Lakewood. I am currently in Stow, and was thinking that maybe they finally changed the Muzak station to something fun. After all, I did hear the song from the end of Pretty in Pink, Duran Duran, and New Order all in a row. My hopes have just been dashed as the muzak station is now playing Taylor Dayne. I feel like I'm trapped in a bad early 90's prom and should be wearing a fuchsia colored dress with lots of ruffles. Dear God, it's pre-crackwhore Whitney Houston now. |

Yesterday I did something I don't think I've ever done before. I took a test that I was actually prepared for. See, somebody thought it would be a good idea to make all the aspring librarians in the School of Library and Information Science take a class on statistics and scientific methods. I'm not alone in feeling like this is the class I spent my entire undergraduate career avoiding. In any case, I spent the entire weekend preparing, and as a result I feel that regardless of what grade I get on the test, I did everything I could to make sure I was prepared. This whole time management thing seems to be working out. (Says the girl who updates livejournal while working on a project due in three hours.)
I realize that It's been a while since I last participated in the egocentric blogging world, however I've been crazy busy, so I will give some highlights of my recent life.
Concerts: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Decemberists
Movies: Finally saw Bottle Rocket, have now seen all the Wes Anderson movies. He is a god. Also have seen: Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, A History of Violence, Broken Flowers.
books: Unsuccessfully tried to get over my Stephen King bias by reading Cujo. It read like a really bad creative writing student's short story, except it kept going for 300 pages. Much prefer Mark Helprin's Freddy and Fredericka.
lusting after: The new ipod with video functions.
classes are great. Except for the above mentioned class that makes me want to alternately punch the professor in the face and stab myself with dull silverware. |

| | The Jesus and Mary Chain-Darklands | ] | Some people spend the summer reading light books by Danielle Steele and John Grisham. Clearly I am not that person. I just Finished England, England by Julian Barnes and I finally finished the selected letters of Gustave Flaubert. I'm currently in the middle of The Disappointment Artist by Jonathan Lethem and am looking forward to reading a collection of Martin Amis short stories next week. (Hmmm, I'm looking at this, and it's really no wonder that I don't have much of a social life...although I suppose it's a step up that I now do most of my recreational reading in Starbucks instead of on the couch.)
Working at the library has given me access to plenty of films, and this weekend I continued the Brit-fest that has been monopolizing my reading by watching John Schlesinger's Billy Liar. |

| | Coldplay-Parachutes | ] | I realized today that there is an obscene number of Starbucks cups residing in my car right now. I've also realized that you can trace the progression of my semester through these cups. It started with the tall, then I moved on to Grande, but for the past two weeks, I think I've been doing like two Ventis a day. I've learned to accept the weird size names they have adapated...I think it is the final straw in my shift over to the dark side of corporate coffee. I've also learned that the baked goods there are actually very tasty.
My latest connundrum involves my need to posess the new Julian Barnes novel. It just came out last week, however it is only available in the UK, and won't be available in the US until January. That is unacceptable and I am currently brainstorming ways to get my hands on a copy.
I feel like I could write more, but I've spent the better part of my week reading and studying, so I think I'm going to go watch some very unacademic VH-1 |

This is one of those small, perfect, moments in life. |

| | whatever Arabica is playing...was The Postal Service | ] | What has happened to me since I last posted:
1.I now live in Little Italy for the summer.
2.I start a new job at the Lakewood Public Library on Friday.
3.Today was my third day of library school at Kent.
4.The diet and exercise thing seems to be working, as I appear to have lost weight.
5.I have a hot date this weekend. (Just kidding, but since everything else seems to be going well, thought I'd throw that in.) |

| | bad country music at a Truck Stop....Imagine that | ] | If someone had said to me in January that I would run a 5K in May, I wouldn't have believed it. I am the epitome of the anti-athlete. I cringed at the thought of gym class in high school. In college, belly dance was the only Phys-Ed class that I was even remotely interested in. Cut to Laura in May. Not only did I run the 5K on monday, but I placed 2nd in my age division. In addition to that, I have a new goal of running a 10K by the end of the summer.
Despite my newfound inner jock, I haven't lost my academic edge. I've been working my way through the selected letters of Gustave Flaubert, having read Madame Bovary last month. I'm also uber-excited about the new Nick Hornby book that comes out next week. |

| | New Aimee Mann at Arabica | ] | Since Jimmy is spending the summer in Cleveland I figured that he should see the art museum. What I didn't know was that renovations have started, and all of my favorite galleries are closed.....until 2011. I damn near shat myself when the woman told me that my two favorite paintings would be unavailable for viewing for six years. I am now tremendously grateful that I got to see them one last time in January.
I made Jimmy go see The Decemberists at Beachland. I'm pretty sure he hated every minute of it*. I, On the other hand, loved loved and loved it. I swear I cannot get enough of this band.
*I should have seen this one coming...He wasn't really too impressed when he heard them in my car the other day. The next time he got in Belle and Sebastian was in the CD player. The time after that Ryan Adams was playing. Finally he turns to me and says, "you REALLY like this folksy melancholy music stuff, don't you? Do you have anything happy, anything at all?" He flips through the CDs and finds The Smiths, Bright Eyes, Belle and Sebastian, Matt Pond PA, Morrisey, and Wilco. It is official...I have no happy music.
I just got back from the most hellacious job interview ever. I interviewed for a position at the Lakewood Public Library's Children's Department, and it started out like a normal interview. Three people asked me questions, I answered them, and then I immediately felt stupid about my answers. When that was over they handed me a stack of books told me to separate them into two piles, and prepare one to read to them. So they left and came back and I had to read them a children's book. Just when I thought it was over they handed me some paper, and a promt sheet and told me to write an essay. I was soooo not prepared to write an essay, it was hell. |
